About Carly

Carly Chamerlik, CFI, CFI-I

Cert. #4607323 Exp. 07/25

As someone who holds a bachelor’s degree in fine art, it’s safe to say I never dreamed of becoming a pilot as a kid. It just wasn’t on my radar (no pun intended).

I spent my time in college painting, performing, and avoiding math class. A few years after college, frustrated with the limitations of the art industry, I threw my hands up and became a flight attendant. It was a “why the hell not” kind of move for me. I was 25 and hadn’t yet found my calling, so I thought I might as well see the world while I figured it out.

I started flying for a major US airline in 2018 and fell in love with the lifestyle. But to be perfectly honest, I couldn’t envision myself pouring Diet Coke for a very average salary for the rest of my life. I craved a bigger challenge, a bigger paycheck, and a better view - those galley windows leave much to be desired.

A long winding road of obstacles (including hit singles How Do I Pay For This and Hello Global Pandemic) ultimately led me to the American Airlines Cadet Academy in Mesa, Arizona, in 2021.

Life after training

As of July 2023, I am now a CFI/ CFI-I (certificated flight instructor - instrument) and a commercial pilot rated in multi- and single-engine land airplanes. I instruct students at the private, instrument, and commercial levels, and my ultimate career goal is to captain a widebody one day.

I won’t sugarcoat it: Flight training is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, mentally and physically. Flying is not easy and it’s not for everyone; but for those who have the heart and the work ethic to follow through, flying, I believe, is one of the most deeply satisfying and rewarding experiences a person can have.

It didn’t occur to me that I could be a pilot until my late 20s, and my personal mission now is to invite as many people as possible to the party so that others don’t have to wait so long to find this path. This career provides insane opportunities, massive personal growth, and just straight up good times to those who dare to participate.
